Remote inspection is essential for the successful implementation of Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) because it allows for real-time monitoring for quality control of the additive manufacturing process and safe concerns from a remote location to enhance the efficiency and save the cost. Digital twin technology is also becoming increasingly important in the WAAM industry because it can be used to simulate the additive manufacturing process in a virtual environment, allowing designers and engineers to test and optimize different process parameters before the physical part is produced. Thus, this paper proposes the architecture of the remote inspection and digital twin system for WAAM that considers Augmented Reality. The presented system architecture provides the capability for collaborative users to participate in real-time sharing of vast amounts of data generated from wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) processes, while also enabling vivid observation of the process in situ through the augmented reality interface. This work showcases the potential of the proposed architecture through a case scenario.
