Condensation on the inner surfaces of automotive headlamps lens is a critical quality problem. Therefore, extensive efforts have been made to prevent condensation. This paper focuses on desiccants, which are widely used for preventing condensation. Desiccants generally exhibit a high absorption rate in part-level tests. However, according to our investigations based on field data, the maximum absorption rate of a desiccant under actual car conditions is considerably low. Herein, we identify failure mode and mechanism and investigate the root causes of the low absorption performance. Then, we propose a new concept and corrective actions for improvement. Moreover, we also propose a new simplified test method to estimate the performance and lifetime in the field and evaluate existing and proposed desiccants. Finally, we describe the results that the performance improves and the test method is reliable.
